Robin Williams also reminded us that no amount of success, fame, or fortune can save us from death or even depression.
Whether it was suicide or accident, we lost a genius. I don’t know his personal life or what went on inside his head, or even his inner spiritual beliefs. We all suffer from depression from time to time, but for some it is a never-ending battle related to brain chemistry that requires medicine, for some it’s psychological and counselors can help, for some it’s spiritual and studying the Bible and praying can help.
Some people think mental illness is a will power issue. But it’s not that different from back pain. Back pain can have many different causes and remedies can vary from changing how you sit to physical therapy, to surgery, to counseling on pain management. But simple “mind over matter” will power is not a highly successful method of treatment for physical or mental illness.
For followers of Christ, we are reminded that our value is not based on what we think of ourselves or what others think of us. It is based on the price that was paid for us. Each one of us is worth the life of the one and only perfect man, Yeshua, the one and only son of the Living God.
For those who are not followers of Christ, Yeshua laid down his life and then took it up again to demonstrate that if you believe in him you are not believing in a fairy tale. Rather, you are believing in Truth and have the assurance that death has lost its sting. Give him a 30-day challenge – read the Book of John and Romans and listen only to a contemporary Christian Radio (91.7 The Promise) station for 30 days.
Obey God – Take care of yourself and love yourself, so that you can care for and love your neighbor as yourself. The Holy Spirit inspried Paul to write: 1 Cor. 6:19-20 Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and that you are not your own? For you have been bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body.
